THE PREDICTION
World number 17 Alize Cornet came back from a set down to beat Elena-Gabriela Ruse on Wednesday in a much-needed result after losing her first five matches this season. The former number 11 looks set to retire this season, probably at Roland-Garros, and so we could see her finally loosen up on court after taking two wins in her last two tournaments. This is a very tough draw against world number 17 Ekaterina Alexandrova, though, as the Russian recently corrected her own poor start to 2023 with a brilliant run to the quarter-finals of the Miami Open. The 28-year-old has put in some solid performances on clay so far, including a run to the quarter-finals of the Charleston Open, but it is probably her weakest surface overall. Back the Russian to earn at least a set here or risk the outright call but it is always wise not to underestimate Cornet.
