World number 60 Emil Ruusuvuori proved himself once again on a US hardcourt with an incredible three-set victory over seventh seed Andrey Rublev on Tuesday. The 24-year-old reached the quarter-finals of the Miami Open for the second time in three season earlier this year but he has struggled to bring this sort of level away from US hardcourts for an intriguing, if slightly confusing, extra factor to consider. World number 58 Alexei Popyrin came through the battle of the lucky losers against Daniel Altmaier in the first round before enjoying another spot of luck as he received a walkover to the round of 16 at injured Nicolas Jarry’s expense. The Aussie is technically riding a six-match tour-level winning streak after claiming his second ATP title at the Umag Open last month and he will certainly be the fresher of the two in this first meeting here. Popyrin, also 24, has to be feeling free to express himself after his blessed run to the last 16 but tiebreaks looks the best way to avoid a result here. Take at least one in the match between two hard-to-break players, with Ruusuvuori seeing two in his match with Rublev, to leave the victor up to chance.
