THE PREDICTION
This should be a fierce match for the tennis purists on Thursday as two of the bigger servers on tour, and two of the more unpredictable performers, start the day’s play in Doha. World number 46 Alexei Popyrin won his maiden ATP title by defeating Alexander Bublik in the Singapore Open final three years ago but Bublik, now at a career-high of 21st, has gone on to enjoy the more consistent results since. The 26-year-old won his maiden ATP title in Montpellier a year later, added two more at the Halle 500 and Antwerp last season, and claimed a second Montpellier trophy earlier this month to see four career titles to Popyrin’s two.
Bublik came back from a set down to beat Marton Fucsovics on Wednesday whilst 24-year-old Popyrin overcame a tough assault by Hugo Grenier in three sets, his second three-setter this week, to suggest this match will need a decider but the Kazakh is the reasonable favourite to win it. A tiebreak seems likely between two heavy hitters so consider a combination of Bublik to win at least a set and at least one tiebreak here to leave the result up to chance.
