World number 66 Tatjana Maria successfully defended her Bogota Open title earlier this month and she made it six wins on the spin before defeat to Caroline Garcia last time out at the Stuttgart Open. This could be an interesting match between players several generations apart as the 35-year-old veteran takes on up-and-comer Alex Eala but the 17-year-old has seriously struggled so far this season. The Filipino fell in the first round of qualifying here last season and it seems unlikely she can do much better against a seasoned clay-courter like Maria in this first meeting between the two. The altitude in Madrid will favour the heavier hitters this week but whilst Eala has a promising future her current form suggests Maria can ease through in two here.
