Former world number two Alexander Zverev laboured to a straight-sets victory over Gijs Brouwer on Thursday, out-lasting the plucky Dutchman in two tiebreaks to get a foothold in at Wimbledon. The 26-year-old’s power serve and enormous wingspan should make him far better on grass than he has been in the past but two round of 16 exits in 2017 and 2021 make this his least effective major by some way. World number 116 Yosuke Watanuki qualified well last week to make his SW19 debut and he came back from two sets down to stun Marc-Andrea Huesler in impressive fashion on Wednesday. The 25-year-old reached the second round of the Australian Open in his overall Grand Slam debut in January before defeat to Sebastian Korda and he looks set for a similar fate here with the challenge a little too steep. Zverev looked uncomfortable on Thursday and whilst he should improve a little here the sensible option is taking him to win outright. You could consider adding at least a tiebreak in the match as the pair saw five in their combined first round matches.
