THE PREDICTION
World number five Alexander Zverev passed a significant test with victory over impressive home hopeful Luciano Darderi on Sunday, turning the screw in straight sets after an opening tiebreak. The 27-year-old won his first of five Masters titles here in Rome back in 2017 and he is fast-becoming a serious contender for another this weekend as natural predators Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic are now all absent from the draw.
World number 53 Nuno Borges has put in some dogged displays this fortnight, with two of his three matches sailing over three hours in length in comebacks over Pedro Martinez and home hopeful Francesco Passaro. Four of the Portuguese’s eight sets have gone to tiebreaks so far in Rome to suggest adding one to the mix in this pick would be a reasonable risk but the suitably cautious call is backing Zverev to win their first encounter outright, with Borges spending almost thrice as long on court as the former champion.
TIP: ALEXANDER ZVEREV TO WIN
