THE PREDICTION
World number two Novak Djokovic made it eight wins from eight over Taylor Fritz on Friday with a bruising 6-0, 6-4 result over the American that did nothing short of crush the atmosphere on Centre Court. The 36-year-old is here in Cincinnati to prove he remains the title favourite at the incoming US Open after missing out last year due to covid-19 regulations and he has conceded just 13 games en-route to the final after extending another 100% winning streak over Gael Monfils. Former world number two Alexander Zverev won the Cincinnati Open two years ago but could not return to defend his title after suffering a serious foot injury last summer. The 27-year-old is therefore riding a nine-match winning streak at this tournament after four strong results this week, including a three-setter over nemesis Daniil Medvedev in the round of 16, and often finds his best tennis against a respecting foe in Djokovic. The Serb leads their head-to-head 7-4 but each of their last five matches have seen sets go both ways and two of their last three have gone the German’s way en-route to huge titles at the Tokyo Olympics and ATP Finals in 2021.
In his current guise this looks like Djokovic’s match to lose but it would be a surprise to see Zverev come undercooked to a match-up he knows he can win in these conditions. Back Djokovic to win outright or consider a one-off on Zverev to earn at least a set.
