Former world number two Alexander Zverev reached the semi-finals at the Halle Open last week before losing to eventual champion Alexander Bublik in another missed opportunity. The 26-year-old was in his prime last summer before suffering a serious foot injury in the semi-finals at Roland-Garros but after a relatively difficult return to the tour this year he was able to, impressively, emulate that run in Paris before defeat to Casper Ruud. The German has all the tools required to thrive on grass apart from, it seems, any sort of comfort on the surface – with two runs to the round of 16 here in 2017 and 2021 by far his worst record at a Grand Slam. World number 153 Gijs Brouwer qualified without dropping a set this week to make his Wimbledon debut but the Dutchman will have to improve at this level as he takes a three-match losing streak into this first encounter. Back Zverev to win this opener outright inside an accumulator or in straight sets on its own.
