This will be the third instalment this season of one of the best modern rivalries on tour between Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev, with both of their battles so far this year falling the Russian’s way in three tight sets. World number three Medvedev came back from a set down to oust a tough clay-court specialist in Bernabe Zapata Miralles on Monday to pass a significant test in conditions he outwardly dislikes whilst Zverev was in control of his third round match with J.J. Wolf either side of an overnight rain delay. The current world number 22 is still working his way back to his best level after suffering a season-ending injury this time last year and it remains to be seen how well he can compete as he takes to the court for a second time today, with the first set absolutely crucial to his motivation here.
Zverev has taken the first set in both of their epics this season before falling away at Indian Wells and Monte-Carlo but these conditions favour him over the Russian, who craves a fast court more than most on tour.
