THE PREDICTION

This will be the second meeting this season between world number 16 Alexander Zverev and number 82 Christopher O’Connell, with former number two Zverev coming through in straight sets at this stage of the Dubai Tennis Championships. 28-year-old O’Connell was in that match, though, and he has enjoyed perhaps his best spell of form yet in his career this season to see wins over top 40 players and a set taken from a red-hot Daniil Medvedev at the Qatar Open. 25-year-old Zverev should be targeting no less than the title here in Munich as a two-time former champion from 2017 and 2018 but the likes of Holger Rune and Taylor Fritz are probably just ahead of him in the favourites list at this stage. Zverev has something to prove this week after a tight defeat to Medvedev at the Monte-Carlo Masters last week created some aggro but O’Connell beat Ugo Humbert in straight sets on Monday to get a useful win in his legs. Back Zverev to win in straight sets here but consider adding at least a tiebreak outside of an accumulator.
