THE PREDICTION
Former world number two Alexander Zverev is coming up to the anniversary of his season-ending foot injury suffered in the semi-finals of Roland-Garros last summer. The 26-year-old has struggled to rediscover his best level since returning to the tour at the start of this season but he was always a player capable of peaks and troughs and a defeat to eventual champion Daniil Medvedev in Rome last week followed two encouraging wins. 27-year-old Christopher Eubanks set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 75th this week after some recent results on the Challenger circuit, although his run to the quarter-finals of the Miami Open in March makes up the bulk of his ranking points. The American has tried his best to stay on hardcourts on and off the tour throughout this season so far but he did well to beat Benoit Paire in his first clay match of the year on Sunday – even if Paire remains something of an anomaly on tour. This should be several steps too far, though, against Zverev’s considerable experience on this surface. Zverev won the Geneva Open back in 2019 and he will be eager to string as many matches as possible together here ahead of Roland-Garros. Back the German to win outright, although two should so it.
