THE PREDICTION
Former world number two Alexander Zverev moved back up to 12th this week after an excellent run to the semi-finals of the Cincinnati Open last week, where he lost competitively to eventual champion Novak Djokovic in two sets. The 26-year-old reached his first Grand Slam final here three years ago and took the first two sets before capitulating against Dominic Thiem and he should be considered a dark horse for a deep run in New York with few players able to compete with his groundstrokes in these conditions at his best. 27-year-old Aleksandar Vukic is a fellow big-hitter who recently broke the top 50 for the first time after finishing runner-up to Taylor Fritz at the Atlanta Open. The Aussie has enjoyed the best form of his career in 2023, with three excellent wins over Diego Schwartzman, Borna Coric and Sebastian Korda in Toronto two weeks ago taking him to the round of 16 at a Masters event for the first time but he has been unlucky to draw a former finalist here. A tiebreak between two big servers is certainly on the cards but the sensible call is backing Zverev to win outright.
