THE PREDICTION
22-year-old Alexander Shevchenko claimed his first tour-level win at the Barcelona Open last week but he grabbed a hugely impressive result against rising star Jiri Lehecka on Saturday to make the third round of a Masters tournament on his debut. The Russian will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of around 91st no matter the outcome here but conceding just two games to Lehecka makes him a serious threat to compatriot, and video game pal off the court, Daniil Medvedev. World number three Medvedev beat Andrea Vavassori in straight sets on Saturday to get his Madrid campaign underway, where the high altitude better-suits his game compared to other clay courts. Shevchenko has now won nine matches in Madrid this month, though, after claiming a Challenger here two weeks ago and that gives him a real trump card in this first meeting between the two. Expect a good-natured battle between friends but back Medvedev to come through the outright winner in a match that could genuinely go either way. A one-off on Shevchenko to cause a big shock is tempting but inadvisable.
