World number 93 Alexander Shevchenko grabbed his most impressive win on tour this season with a comeback over Sebastian Korda on Wednesday, backing up a solid opener over Maxime Cressy. The Russian first came to the fore on clay at the Madrid Masters, where he continued a winning streak from a Challenger earlier in May through to the third round before a three-set defeat to Daniil Medvedev. World number 30 Dan Evans has been struggling on tour for most of the season but he too enjoyed a strong run on clay with a semi-final exit at the Barcelona Open in April. The 33-year-old had failed to win since then, taking a seven-match losing streak into Washington, and he looked like suffering another early exit on Wednesday when he went a set down to Gregoire Barrere but something may have clicked after he fought back to dominate the last two sets.
The Brit will be feeling a lot more confident after such a torrid summer but Shevchenko must not be underestimated after impressing this week. Three sets seem likely here so back Evans to win at least one of them as the more experienced at this level.
