THE PREDICTION

World number 27 Alexander Bublik came back from a set down to squeak past a spirited Denis Shapovalov on Wednesday, edging through the second-set tiebreak 14-12 before wrapping up the win. The 26-year-old won his maiden ATP title here in Montpellier two years ago but he was stunned in the first round by Gregoire Barrere, whom lost in three tight sets to next opponent Alexander Shevchenko on Thursday. 23-year-old Shevchenko, now a compatriot of Bublik’s after switching allegiances to Kazakhstan last week, ended last season on a high by finishing runner-up to Ugo Humbert on a French hardcourt, indoors, at the Metz Open and he should be a tough challenge in this first encounter with the second seed. All of their respective matches have gone to three sets so far this week but given Bublik’s experience here the most sensible option is taking the elder Kazakh to earn at least a set to leave the result up to chance.
