THE PREDICTION

33-year-old Jan-Lennard Struff set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 21st this week after finishing runner-up to Frances Tiafoe at the Stuttgart Open and he started Halle off in fine fashion with a straight-sets victory over Roman Safiullin. The German burst into form at the Madrid Open last month, coming through as a lucky loser from qualifying to finish runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz, and he looks set to break the top 20 for the first time in a surprising renaissance season after spending much of the past two years in the lower half of the top 100. World number 48 Alexander Bublik is capable of much better tennis than his current ranking suggests but he is suffering this season, with Tuesday’s win over an out-of-sorts Borna Coric taking his 2023 record up to 9-19. Struff beat Bublik in comfortable straight sets in both of their previous meetings and at this moment in time the home favourite looks like a genuine dark horse for the title at Halle. Back Struff to win outright inside an accumulator or in straight sets on its own.
