World number seven Holger Rune successfully defended his maiden ATP title at the Munich Open last week in a gritty performance against an inspired Botic van de Zandschulp, the same player he faced there in 2022. The 19-year-old now has two titles on clay and two on indoor hardcourts, including his career-changing Paris Masters trophy won at Novak Djokovic’s expense last November, and success in those conditions should see his game heavily favoured by high altitude in Madrid. This is no gimme, though, against world number 55 Alexander Bublik after the Kazakh saw off Daniel Elahi Galan in a marathon three-set battle on Wednesday. The 25-year-old snapped a five-match losing streak, his second poor streak since late last season, with victory over Galan typified by a 17-15 opening tiebreaker that suggests he is dialled in enough here to consider a threat. Bublik upset Rune in three sets in the quarter-final of the Moselle Open late last season and he should not be underestimated here. Back Rune to win outright.
