World number 51 Alexander Bublik is enduring his worst season on tour for some time but he has at least picked up a few results in recent weeks to take a 7-17 record into Roland-Garros, 3-5 on clay. The 25-year-old is perhaps the most unpredictable player on the ATP tour and capable of anything with a maverick, high-percentage Plan A and no Plan B and that makes keeping his matches out of accumulators the wise decision. 21-year-old Giulio Zeppieri qualified without breaking a set this week but the Italian is yet to win at tour-level this season. The world number 129 lost his Grand Slam debut to Hubert Hurkacz here last season and he will find a similarly powerful opponent in this first meeting with Bublik. The Kazakh is about as likely to blast through in straight sets as capitulate in the fifth, so back Bublik to earn at least two sets and leave the result up to chance.
