THE PREDICTION
Former world number three Grigor Dimitrov comes into the US Open with more optimism than recent seasons after enjoying an upturn in form under new co-coach Jamie Delgado. The 32-year-old moved back inside the top 20 this month after reaching a first tour final since 2019 in Geneva, making the round of 16 at Roland-Garros and Wimbledon, and deep runs at 500 events in Queen’s and Washington. Dimitrov has not won a match since the third of August after suffering an injury scare ahead of the Canada Masters but he should have recovered significantly enough to beat Alex Molcan here as the Slovak continues to struggle through 2023. World number 115 Molcan reached the third round here two years ago but his best results have come on clay since the starts of 2022 – although it has been a sophomore year to forget so far. 2019 semi-finalist Dimitrov should need a top 30 player at least to oust him this fortnight but the suitably sensible call is taking him to win outright.
