THE PREDICTION
18-year-old Alex Michelsen made his ATP tour debut at the Mallorca Championships last month, losing to eventual champion Christopher Eubanks in the first round, but he suddenly faces his own chance at glory. The American will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 140th no matter the outcome here but he could rise as high as 118th with victory here after stunning four-time Newport champion John Isner in the semi-finals. World number 38 Adrian Mannarino lost to Eubanks in that Mallorca final last month after back-to-back quarter-finals reached on his favoured grass. The 35-year-old is one of the better performers in these conditions with some strong results this week over Ugo Humbert and Jordan Thompson but he will have to play the villain of the piece against a home underdog.
Michelsen is riding a huge wave right now but a final will apply a new sort of pressure. Mannarino won his first ATP title on grass at ‘s-Hertogenbosch in 2019 and he added a second at Winston-Salem this time last season but the Frenchman has a fairly concerning record in finals, losing 10 of 12 played so far. Back Michelsen, with the Newport crowd behind him, to earn at least a set or risk the outright win for a fairy tale start to his career.
