THE PREDICTION
World number 85 Marco Cecchinato played well on Thursday to beat Marton Fucsovics in straight sets, backing up a solid qualifying campaign in Madrid. The 30-year-old reached the semi-finals of Roland-Garros in 2018 during a two-year golden period on his favoured clay but he remains a threat on the surface despite his lack of success at this specific tournament over the years. World number 19 Alex de Minaur will receive a warm welcome here in Madrid as a dual citizen of Australian and Spanish descent and the 24-year-old spent much of his formative years in Spain. De Minaur has all the tools, and experience in these conditions, to do very well across the clay swing but he has yet to really unlock that potential on the surface. The Aussie claimed the biggest title of his career at the Mexican Open in February but he has lost four of his six matches since to make this a tricky call.
Cecchinato is a seasoned expert on this surface and he has won all three previous meetings with De Minaur on clay, with the Aussie level at 3-3 in their head-to-head on grass and hardcourts.
