24-year-old Alex de Minaur set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 12th this week after an incredible run to his first Masters final in Toronto, where he finished runner-up to Jannik Sinner. The Aussie endured the tougher run to the final with huge wins over Cam Norrie, Taylor Fritz and a remarkable performance in beating former champion Daniil Medvedev but it was a second final lost on the spin after he finished runner-up to Stefanos Tsitsipas in Los Cabos the week before. World number 44 J.J. Wolf is a Cincinnati native who will be backed to the hilt and beyond in this intriguing opening clash but he lost at the first hurdle this time last year and he drawn a much tougher opponent here. A recent run to the Atlanta semi-finals was commendable but Wolf needs to improve on recent form to stand a chance against a likely hungry, not resentful, De Minaur. The Aussie beat Wolf in straight sets at the Stockholm Open late last season and he can be backed to come through outright here with three sets a distinct possibility after Sunday’s comedown.
