THE PREDICTION
This promises to be an exciting match on Thursday in the second meeting this season between world number 19 Alex de Minaur and number 31 Grigor Dimitrov. 31-year-old Dimitrov beat De Minaur in three tight sets at the Rotterdam Open back in February but the pair share a finely-poised 2-2 head-to-head record and this first meeting on clay should favour the Aussie in his home away from home. 24-year-old De Minaur spent much of his formative years developing his game in Spain and he played like it on Wednesday, conceding just one game to Alexander Shevchenko in a clear show of intent this week. The home crowd will get behind De Minaur as an honorary Spaniard with dual citizenship and his wicked pace should help him chase down more of Dimitrov’s angles on clay than he managed indoors in Rotterdam. Former world number three Dimitrov conceded just four games to Emilio Gomez on Wednesday but it is hard to see De Minaur losing at this stage. Two of their last three matches have seen three sets, though, so the suitably cautious move would be taking the Aussie to earn at least a set and leaving the victor up to chance.
