World number three Daniil Medvedev won the Canada Masters two years ago en-route to his maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open, where he scuppered Novak Djokovic’s calendar slam in three blistering sets. The 27-year-old is arguably in even better form this season with five ATP titles won already, including a first on clay at the Rome Masters, and he has looked solid so far in Toronto with two straight-set victories over Matteo Arnaldi and Lorenzo Musetti. World number 18 Alex de Minaur upset eighth seed Taylor Fritz in three sets on Thursday to back-up his excellent win over Cam Norrie in the first round. The 24-year-old finished runner-up to Stefanos Tsitsipas at the Los Cabos Open last week to bring some serious hardcourt form into the Canada Masters but he has drawn perhaps the shortest straw here in Medvedev, who leads their head-to-head 4-1.
