World number 19 Alex de Minaur did well to oust clay specialist Marco Cecchinato in straight sets on Saturday but the Aussie has failed to win back-to-back matches on tour since claiming the most prestigious title of his career yet at the Mexican Open last month. The 24-year-old will be backed with an almost partisan atmosphere after spending most of his formative years in Spain and he should need that extra edge against former world number 14 Aslan Karatsev, who looks to be turning his form around on clay. Karatsev is ranked over a 100 places lower this year than last after a woeful last 12 months on tour but back-to-back wins over Laslo Djere and Botic van de Zandschulp here in Madrid make sit four wins for the week through from qualifying. De Minaur won their only previous match in straight sets at the Sofia Open back in 2020 but Karatsev has found some rhythm in Madrid that makes him dangerous. Back De Minaur to earn at least a set and leave the victor up to chance.
