THE PREDICTION
World number 11 Alex de Minaur beat the returning Rafael Nadal in straight sets on Wednesday and he should receive a home-from-home support moving forwards in Barcelona, where he spent many of his formative years. The 25-year-old is yet to claim a clay-court title amidst his career total of eight trophies but this looks as good as place as anywhere to start. World number 36 Arthur Fils won his maiden title on clay in Lyon last spring but he has since proven to be an excellent all-court threat with a bright future. The 19-year-old overcame a tough clay-courter in Daniel Altmaier on Wednesday but he has so far struggled to string results together in 2024, perhaps a hangover from a surprise defeat in the Next Gen ATP Finals in November. Back De Minaur, who has all the weapons to one day be considered a top threat on this surface, to win their first encounter in straight sets.
