THE PREDICTION
World number 31 Yoshihito Nishioka burst into the form of his career almost 12 month ago with an incredible run to the Citi Open final in Washington, finishing runner-up to Nick Kyrgios. The 27-year-old went on to claim his second ATP title at the Korea Open and he started 2023 in much the same vein, reaching the round of 16 at the Australian Open before running out of steam in the round of 16. The Japanese number one received a bye to the round of 16 at the Atlanta Open as the fourth seed here and this will be tough first match back on a hardcourt against big-hitting Aleksandar Vukic, who set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 82nd this week. 27-year-old Vukic beat Ethan Quinn in straight sets on Monday to get a good foothold in Atlanta and he was enjoying some strong form on hardcourts on the Challenger circuit earlier this season. Facing Nishioka’s tricky, lefty, disruptive game for the first time is tough for any player but Vukic is in some of the form of his career to at least look a creditable threat. Back Nishioka to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
