THE PREDICTION
27-year-old Aleksandar Vukic set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 62nd this week after finishing runner-up in his maiden ATP tour final to Taylor Fritz at the Atlanta Open two weeks ago. The Aussie upset Yoshihito Nishioka and Ugo Humbert en-route to a hugely impressive display against Fritz, taking the American all the way in three tight sets to realise his potential on tour. Vukic lost in the final round of qualifying this weekend but that could well serve to his advantage with the pressure off as a lucky loser in this first encounter with world number 15 Borna Coric. 26-year-old Coric recently helped Croatia lift the Hopman Cup before a run to the semi-finals of the Los Cabos Open, where he lost handily to mini rival Stefanos Tsitsipas. The Croat won the most prestigious title of his career almost exactly a year ago at the Cincinnati Masters and he will be desperate to build on that here in Toronto before his title defence next week. Back the Croat to win outright, though, with Vukic a tricky draw right now.
