24-year-old Alejandro Davidovich Fokina set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 23rd this week after stunning Alexander Zverev and Casper Ruud en-route to the semi-finals of the Canada Masters, where he lost to eventual runner-up Alex de Minaur. The Spaniard had been putting in some strong performances this summer with few results to show for it but it will be fascinating to see what he can do across the rest of the hardcourt swing with a game for all surfaces at his best. World number 31 Tomas Martin Etcheverry reached the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros back in June to cap off what has been a remarkable season on his favoured clay but the Argentine lost comfortably in the first round of Toronto last week. Etcheverry’s back-wall style will need some tweaking if he is going to compete on hardcourts but Davidovich Fokina can sometimes struggle to back-up results week-on-week. The Spaniard won their first encounter in straight sets, on clay, in Barcelona back in April and he can be backed to come through outright here.
