World number 60 Albert Ramos-Vinolas is enduring his worst season for some time this year as he takes a seven-match losing streak into the Madrid Open. The 35-year-old has been an ever-present threat on his favoured clay over the last decade or so but a five-match losing streak on the surface is really concerning and the conditions in Madrid will better-suit his opponent. World number 69 Ilya Ivashka is a solid all-courter who favours power off the baseline and the high altitude here will add an extra whip to his blistering forehand. The 29-year-old beat in-form Dan Evans on clay at the Monte-Carlo Masters earlier this month after some reasonable results in March and he was the winner in the only previous match with Ramos-Vinolas at the Paris Masters back in 2021.
