This could be a proper thriller on Saturday if world number 72 Albert Ramos-Vinolas can bring his best tennis to a fourth encounter with world number two Carlos Alcaraz. The elder Spaniard took a 2-1 lead in their second round Roland-Garros clash last summer before Alcaraz dug deep to take a 3-0 lead in their head-to-head but all three of their matches have been well-contested on clay, one in each of the last three seasons. 35-year-old Ramos-Vinolas has struggled to find the sort of intensity that made him a menace to anyone on his favoured clay last season so far this year but he came back from a set down to beat Francesco Passaro on Thursday and he will find some extra motivation for this. 20-year-old Alcaraz takes an 11-match winning streak into the second round of Rome after a commanding campaign at the Madrid Open but he did start shakily two weeks ago, conceding a set to Emil Ruusuvuori before really turning up. That, and previous editions of this match-up, makes taking Alcaraz to win outright the sensible move.
