World number 35 Adrian Mannarino comes into the US Open as the 22nd seed after an excellent run to the quarter-finals of the Cincinnati Open last week. The 35-year-old enjoyed an excellent spell on his favoured grass over the summer, finishing runner-up to Christopher Eubanks at the Mallorca Championships in June before ending the swing with a third ATP title at the Hall of Fame Open but he passed up the opportunity to defend his Winston-Salem title this week in anticipation of New York. 25-year-old Yosuke Watanuki will make his US Open debut at a career-high ATP world ranking of 85th after enjoying an excellent breakthrough season on tour and he has so far won both of his openers at Grand Slam debuts in Melbourne and Wimbledon. The Japanese only recently grabbed the best ranking result of his career against Felix Auger-Aliassime at the Washington Open but Mannarino’s disruptive game is always a tough ask in a first meeting. Back the Frenchman to utilise all his experience to earn at least two sets as the likelier of two very capable victors or consider a one off on this match to see five sets.
