This should be a fascinating clash between two left-handers who prefer to tie their opponents up in knots than go for broke on court. 35-year-old Adrian Mannarino received a bye to the round of 16 at the Dallas Open as the fourth seed this week after setting a career-high ATP world ranking of 17th off the back of his remarkable run to the round of 16 at the Australian Open. The Frenchman stunned Ben Shelton in five sets, his third five-setter on the spin, to reach the last 16 and that rematch will be on the Dallas crowd’s wish list this week – potentially adding to his support against world number 83 Yoshihito Nishioka.
28-year-old Nishioka is far better than his current deflated ranking suggests but the Japanese has struggled to stay fit on tour over the past 12 months or so, previously finding his best form yet in 2022 to finish runner-up to Nick Kyrgios at the Washington Open and claim the Korea Open for his own. Mannarino beat Nishioka in straight sets at this stage in Dallas two years ago to lead their head-to-head 2-0 and he stands a solid chance at making that 3-0 given his current form.
