World number 10 Frances Tiafoe has so far put in some near-perfect performances for the early stage of a Grand Slam campaign, blasting past Learner Tien and Sebastian Ofner in straight sets each with little fuss or fanfare. The 25-year-old reached the semi-finals here last summer before a five-set epic went eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz’ way but the run proved to the already popular American that he is capable of more, particularly on home soil. World number 35 Adrian Mannarino is a tricky customer, though, with some good form behind him this summer after winning his third ATP title at the Hall of Fame Open in July. The 35-year-old came back from a set down to overcome up-and-comer Fabian Marozsan on Wednesday, backing up a solid-enough four-setter over Yosuke Watanuki, and he has taken sets in both previous meetings with Tiafoe – albeit many years ago. Their most recent meeting saw Tiafoe win a US Open opener in four sets back in 2018 but both players have improved in the past two seasons to suggest four sets are likelier than three.
