THE PREDICTION
Elise Mertens’ preparation for Wimbledon was hardly ideal as she lost in the first round at both the Birmingham Classic and the Eastbourne International. Those defeats did not appear to affect her confidence though, as she made light work of British hope Harriet Dart in the first round on Tuesday, coming through 6-1, 6-3. Having previously made the fourth round in 2019, Mertens will be hoping to at least match that run this year.
Zhu Lin reached the second round at SW19 for the first time in her career courtesy of a come-from-behind win over Mona Barthel on Tuesday in what is surely the biggest win of what has been a season of struggle for the Chinese player. Her round one win will no doubt have given her a boost but Elise Mertens is a significant step up in class and the Belgian world number 16 should ultimately comes through this second-round encounter in straight sets.
