THE PREDICTION
These two played out wildly contrasting first-round matches as Aljaz Bedene recorded a routine straight-sets win over Corentin Moutet for the loss of just eight games while Yoshihito Nishioka contested a gruelling five-set marathon against the big-serving John Isner. Although exceptionally fit, that exertion is likely to have taken a fair bit out of the Japanese player and Bedene will undoubtedly be the fresher of the two here.
Bedene will present a different challenge to Nishioka than Isner did, and given the manner in which the Slovenian player won his opener at Wimbledon, he looks capable of coming out on top here and reaching the second round at SW19 for the second time in his career. As we’ve seen though, Nishioka is a battler and this won’t be straightforward, so backing both players to win a set looks worthwhile.
