THE PREDICTION

Alexei Popyrin could be in for a career-year this season with a couple of big wins to his name already in 2021, beating David Goffin in the first round of the Australian Open and Tommy Paul in one of Melbourne Park’s warm-up events beforehand. He has reached just his second ever ATP quarter-final with two assured performances and faces fellow Aussie Matthew Ebden here with an excellent chance to make his first semi-final. World number 316 Ebden took out the second seed John Millman in the round of 16 and will be a hard-working opponent for Popyrin but the younger Australian has looked in good shape so far this year and deserves a place in the semi-finals for his efforts. Popyrin won the only previous encounter between these two back in 2018 in a straight-sets victory at the Basel Indoors and similar conditions here should see similar results with a straight-sets victory for Popyrin.
