THE PREDICTION
28-year-old Taro Daniel came through the qualifiers as a lucky loser at the Serbia Open and has not looked back with an impressive three-set victory over John Millman on Thursday. The world number 126 has one ATP title to his name and that came on clay at the Istanbul Open back in 2018 but he has struggled to stay on the tour in recent years and could well use this week in Belgrade to reinvigorate his career. He will face a tough prospect in Uruguay’s Federico Delbonis. though, who played a mammoth three-set match against the fourth seed Dusan Lajovic to reach the quarter-finals here in keeping with his strong performances on clay this season. Delbonis is a two-time ATP titlist, with both of those coming on clay, and the 33-year-old should have enough experience to overcome a spirited Taro Daniel on Friday. A result is no sure thing, though, and Daniel’s campaign looks an anomaly that could keep playing out. Three of their combined four matches at the Serbia Open have gone to three sets this week so take this match to see a decider and leave a winner up to chance.
