THE PREDICTION
World number 28 Aslan Karatsev was tested throughout an exciting three-set encounter with Aljaz Bedene but the Russian came through via a deciding tiebreak and should fare better from here on in. The 27-year-old has occasionally looked a bit at sea in recent tournaments, caught between the heights of reaching the Australian Open semi-finals and winning the Dubai Open and perhaps some self-doubt as to his new place inside the top 30. He should be able to overcome Gianluca Mager, though, for a second time this year after beating the Italian in straight sets in the first round of the Australian Open. World number 98 Mager has the history for random deep runs at clay court tournaments and has taken out strong opponents so far in Laslo Djere and Alexei Popyrin without dropping a set but Karatsev’s bout with Bedene should help focus his mind for this quarter-final. A potential semi-final against Novak Djokovic, a rematch of their Australian Open clash, will be all the motivation the Russian needs to power through this in straight sets.
