THE PREDICTION
World number 28 Aslan Karatsev proved a lot of doubters wrong on Saturday by beating the home favourite, first seed and world number one Novak Djokovic in three sets. The match was the longest three-set slog of the year and of high, intense quality throughout late into the evening which could negatively affect the Russian in the final on Sunday afternoon. World number 10 Matteo Berrettini will have to recalibrate here quickly as he would probably have spent the week planning to face Djokovic but the Italian has been in fine form all week. Berrettini overcame an incredible effort from Taro Daniel to reach the final and this first meeting with Karatsev is as intriguing as it is unexpected. Fatigue could play a factor here and that would be a shame but after what Karatsev produced yesterday he should be able to beat 25-year-old Berrettini at 90% of his current output. Berrettini is well capable winning but is not quite up to his peak powers yet and Karatsev’s momentum from beating Djokovic should see him lift his second title of the year.
