THE PREDICTION
Until this week in Doha, 29-year-old Nikoloz Basilashvili had not managed to string three wins together on tour since the summer of 2019 and the Georgian’s 4-13 record for last season looked to be a worrying trend towards decline. However, the world number 42 beat a fatigued Roger Federer in three sets on Thursday and that feat looks to have really centred the three-time ATP titlist as he dismantled an in-form Taylor Fritz over two sets in the semi-finals. In another shock, Roberto Bautista Agut beat the tournament favourite and reigning champion Andrey Rublev in straight-sets in their semi-final to reach his second final here in Doha after winning the event in 2019. RBA leads a healthy 3-1 head-to-head record over Basilashvili, including a straight sets win over the Georgian at last year’s Hamburg Open, but Basilashvili has won their only meeting on a hard court and his trajectory this week makes him a big anomaly to consider. 32-year-old Bautista Agut should be winning his second Qatar Open title here, and his 10th on tour overall, but take this match to go to a deciding set before he does.
