THE PREDICTION
Fifth seed Aryna Sabalenka was part of a real three-set slog late on Friday night in her quarter-final against Anett Kontaveit, taking the first set before being pegged back and eventually winning the decider comfortably. The Belarusian already has one WTA title this season and looks like one of the star performers on tour this year with the last four players able to defeat her some of the strongest around in Garbine Muguruza (twice), Serena Williams and most recently Ashleigh Barty. However, a top player is who she faces next with world number three Simona Halep finding her rhythm on clay early this year. The Romanian took just over an hour to beat Ekaterina Alxeandrova in straight sets to reach the semis without dropping one and of the last four here in Stuttgart she is the best clay-court player. 29-year-old Halep leads their head-to-head record 3-1 but had to come back from a set down against Sabalenka in their most recent match last year in Dubai and that could be the way it lays here. Halep to win outright is the most reasonable option given how good Sabalenka is playing right now.
