World number one Ashleigh Barty assured her rightful position at the top of the WTA rankings by defending her Miami Open title earlier this month and after a difficult start to the clay season in Charleston she looked in better shape for her round of 16 win over Laura Siegemund on Thursday. The Aussie will face Karolina Pliskova for a seventh time in their careers and leads a healthy 4-2 head-to-head record against the Czech having won their two most recent meetings. They have not played since 2019 but since then the two players’ form has gone in different directions and 29-year-old Pliskova’s hard-hitting game is not best suited to the clay. 24-year-old Barty should be able to amp up her performances so far for a straight-sets win here in Stuttgart.
