THE PREDICTION

Matthew Ebden continued his strong personal form in 2021 by reaching his second ATP 250 quarter-final this season with a straight-sets victory over Emil Ruusuvuori, while Karen Khachanov took out a tough competitor in Mackenzie McDonald. The pair have met once before on tour at the Paris Masters back in 2018 where Khachanov was a set up over the Aussie before Ebden was forced to pull out of the match. 24-year-old Khachanov won his fourth of four ATP titles later that week, back in the days when he was top dog ahead of a talented generation of Russians in Andrey Rublev and Daniil Medvedev. Now 13 places behind Rublev, it may be that Khachanov has struggled with the rise and rise of his compatriots over the last two years, and his form would suggest that over the last season or so, but he looks to be on the mend now. It has taken top 10 players, and top 10 material like Jannik Sinner, to beat him this season so far and so a straight sets victory over world number 287 Matthew Ebden looks to be a reasonable conclusion here.
