THE PREDICTION
In a very unpredictable week on tour, Pierre-Hugues Herbert has reached his maiden final at the Marseille Open via two massive victories this week against reigning champion Stefanos Tsitsipas and then Ugo Humbert in the semi-finals. A straight-sets performance against world number 31 Humbert on Saturday was not in the script with world number 93 Herbert, who is a seasoned doubles player but beat a top five player for the first time this week in Tsitsipas, and he should be taken as a very serious threat by the first seed Daniil Medvedev. The world number three has bulldozed his way through to the final without dropping a set after Matthew Ebden was forced to retire from their semi-final on Saturday but he will be aware that Herbert beat hi the last time they met in a five-set thriller at Roland-Garros in 2019. It was just after that summer that Medvedev truly evolved into the incredible player he is today, though, and for all of Pierre-Hugues Herbert’s excellent work this week it still seems a straight-sets victory for Medvedev is the most likely outcome here.
