- World number 33 Dan Evans continued his incredible Monte-Carlo Masters campaign with a three-set victory over an in-form David Goffin, backing up a straight sets victory over the first seed Novak Djokovic on Thursday.
- The 30-year-old had won just four matches at a Masters event before this week, and four matches on clay on tour overall, but he has doubled both tallies by reaching the semi-finals here.
STEFANOS TSITSIPAS
- 22-year-old Stefanos Tsitsipas was definitely in a game with Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the opening quarter-final on Friday but the Spaniard was forced to retire after the first set.
- The world number five is through to his first semi-final at the Monte-Carlo Masters but he is well-versed at this stage of Masters tournaments having reached five semi-finals and two finals before now.
Dan Evans’ astounding run to the semi-finals of the Monte-Carlo Masters is no shock considering how well he has played for the last six or so months, but the players he has taken out to do so is. Having defeated Novak Djokovic in straight-sets on Thursday, the British number one was able to recalibrate for the quarter-final and a totally different test in David Goffin, whom he had beaten once before. Over three sets Evans was the player capable of seeing out the key moments, saving 15 of the 17 break points Goffin was able to create with masterful concentration and he will be world number five Stefanos Tsitsipas’ toughest challenge this week by some margin in this form. 22-year-old Tsitsipas leads their head-to-head record 2-0 having beat the Brit in two straight-set encounters at last year’s Hamburg Open and Dubai Open, the latter of which was also a semi-final. The Greek will be the better-rested by some way having played just five sets to reach this stage but he should fear any player who beats Novak Djokovic and this version of Evans is a totally different animal to whom he faced last season.
Given the nature of Evans’ week, and the occasional concentration lapses we have seen from Tsitsipas in recent times, this match looks like needing a decider before a winner is called. Whilst Tsitsipas is certainly the favourite to win here, so were recent Miami Open winner Hubert Hurkacz, world number one Novak Djokovic and David Goffin. Evans in this form is an unknown entity, so take this semi-final to see three sets in what should be a high-quality and likely emotional rollercoaster for both players on Saturday.
