THE PREDICTION
World number 12 Pablo Carreno Busta was challenged throughout a fiery first round match with Stefano Travaglia but ultimately avoided the potential banana skin to come through in straight sets. The Spaniard is coming off a fifth ATP title win at the Andalucia Open last week and will be a danger to anyone in Monte-Carlo, although Karen Khachanov was very impressive on Tuesday. The 24-year-old is a very capable of clay-court player, with perhaps this clay season his time to outshine his fellow Russians Rublev and Medvedev, and he overpowered Laslo Djere in straight sets to reach the second round comfortably. Khachanov might have needed this change in surface to kick-start his season and he will be up for the task of facing Carreno Busta for a fifth time having beaten the Spaniard in their last two meetings. PCB beat Khachanov at this stage of Monte-Carlo Open back in 2017 and that remains their only meeting on clay, so with his title in Marbella behind him the 29-year-old does look the likelier to come through here on form. However, it would be a safer option to take this match to see three sets in what could be a thriller.
