Reigning Monte-Carlo Masters champion from 2019 Fabio Fognini played well against a tough opening challenger in Miomir Kecmanovic. The 33-year-old came through a slightly ropey patch to win in straight sets and he will get better and better with each round played after some recent poor form he can put behind him now. World number 63 Jordan Thompson overcame an out-of-sorts Benoit Paire over three sets and two arduous tiebreaks on Sunday to reach the second round here and the Aussie will have benefitted from an extra day’s rest having played on Sunday. Fognini and Thompson have met once before and played out an enthralling five-set second round match at the 2020 Australian Open before the Italian made it through. On clay and with that important, settling win over Kecmanovic behind him, Fognini should be the superior player and can take this in straight sets. However, Thompson never gives up without a fight and could force a decider so a useful alternative might be Fognini to win outright and at least one tiebreak in the match.
