World number 33 Dan Evans was a set up against 2019 Monte-Carlo Open finalist Dusan Lajovic before rain in Monday washed out the remainder of the day’s play. Returning to the court on Tuesday he narrowly lost a tight second-set tiebreak in a recent pattern of not quite taking his quality performances over the line but came back strongly in the third and that win clearly meant a lot to the 30-year-old. He faces a tough test next in recent Masters champions Hubert Hurkacz, as the world number 16 continued his strong form from the Miami Open title onto clay to beat a plucky qualifier in Thomas Fabbiano over three sets. Hurkacz is a fine clay-court player but Evans has shown in the last two weeks that he might have found a way to take his game to this least-favoured surface and their first round performances suggest this match should need a decider. On current form after that, world number 16 Hurkacz edges this encounter but it would suffice to take this match to see three sets and leave a result up to chance. Hurkack beat Evans in three sets last year at this stage of the Rome Masters in three sets.
