THE PREDICTION
World number 83 Alexei Popyrin was handed a bagel in the first set against Pablo Andujar on Tuesday but came back strongly on his first real clay-court match this season. The Aussie won his first ATP title earlier this year at the Singapore Open and whilst clay may not be his favoured surface, beating a Spaniard here is no mean feat. He will face Lucas Pouille for a rematch after their first meeting in the third round of the Australian Open back in 2019 culminated in a five-set victory for the Frenchman. Popyrin was 19 back then and clearly destined for big things in his career but that defeat may have set him back emotionally for a while so this would mean a lot if he won. 27-year-old Pouille is returning from a huge surgery lay-off but was assured in a straight-sets victory over Guido Pella. This match looks a tough one for both players but Popyrin’s extra motivation here could see the 21-year-old over the line. Take the young Aussie to exact revenge with an outright victory.
